Sausage Sizzler - Domian Watch |

G'day Sizzlers!
I have to start off by apologizing to anyone who tried to contact
Sausage over the past day or two, We had an unexplained problem
with our email server, which ended up being a full hard disk.
Needless to say that won't happen again!
I really like the SuperTool I reviewed this week. There may not
be much to monitoring your domains, but it is nice to know they
are safe and sound. Watch My Domains Pro was just the tool I
needed to reassure me that all was well and taken care of.
If you take a look at my webcam image, you will see I have McDonalds money. No Ronald hasn't become
official tender yet, I simple got five bucks for free when I
sent in a coupon from my $4.99 Road Atlas. My daughter Hayden
loves McDonalds and I am partial to it as well. Not a bad deal
hey? I love America and all of the coupon deals you can get! I am
just waiting for the "buy a BMW Z3 for half price" one.
Talking of travelling and food, I believe I am rivaling Randy on
the amount I am doing! We are off again this weekend down to
Kentucky for my nephews high school graduation party. Sounds like
fun to me, plus it means we get to go to Steak'n'Shake
and have a milkshake and "The
Philadelphia".
I saw a chiropractor yesterday. I am helping out with his Website. What an experience it was! I couldn't get
over the technology he had. He scanned my back which picked up
pressure points or something like that, it knew exactly where it
hurt! Although he ran this device on a clunky old laptop, it
certainly did the job! Soon after he jumped on me. At first I
thought I was being attacked but soon released this is what he
does! Appears I need to go in for a few more adjustments.
Keep on sizzling!

PHP on the command line
Although PHP was not built to be a general-purpose language, it
can be used on the command line where traditionally shell script
and Perl are kings. First, you should make sure your php.ini has
the correct setting:
register_argc_argv = On
With that set, you'll be able to read command line parameters
passed to your script. These values can then be accessed with two
variables:
- $_SERVER['argv'] is an array of the command line parameters
- $_SERVER['argc'] is an integer value of the number of parameters that were passed.
Getting at the command line parameters is only half of what
you'll probably need for even basic scripts. The next part is to
read the standard input. This also is a fairly straight forward
piece of code:
$input = '';
$fp = fopen("php://stdin","r");
while (!feof($fp)) {
$BUFFER = fgetc($fp);
$input .= $BUFFER;
}
fclose($fp);
After this piece of code runs, $input will contain
anything that was passed through stdin.
While PHP is not as suited to the command line as other
languages, using it this way would allow you to leverage existing
application logic and objects that are already coded in PHP. This
can be an enormous time saver for a large project.

Tables
What I have touched upon so far with tables will work in most
browsers, yet is not technically correct. Let me remind everyone
that what I am attempting to do here is give people a basic
understanding of various aspects of HTML.
When I say it is not technically correct I mean that we have not
looked at tags such as TH and THEAD. For example TH defines a
header cell, however i have rarely seen this used.
So this issue I am summing up tables by giving you some resources
I think you will find interesting and useful.
The W3C official tutorial on tables can be found here:
http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/Guide/Advanced.html
If you just want another tutorial that explains tables a little
bit differently to me try:
http://www.htmlgoodies.com/tutors/tbl.html
For a tutorial that also discusses some of the differences
between rendering in Internet Explorer compared to Netscape see:

Name: Watch My Domains Pro
Version: 1.1
Cost: US$37

I don't know about everyone else but I have quite a few domains
that I have under my control. They are spread over three
registrars making them somewhat difficult to keep track of.
Personally I do not trust the registrar to email me and remind me
of when my next set of fees are to be paid, so that is why I
decided to try out Watch My Domains Pro.
The concept is really quite simple. Through a whois search of a
domain Watch My Domains Pro creates a database of all the domains
that you ask it to track.
It stores the following information:
- Domain
- Expiry Date
- Registrar
- IP Address
- Name Server (primary, secondary and third)
- Administration email
- Technical Email
- Billing Email
- Last Updated
- Date Created
- The date you last checked the status with Watch My Domains Pro
You can also use it to keep track of other domains that you might
like to pick up when they fall back on to the market.
It is a nifty tool, a bit pricey for my likes, however to keep
control of your domains it is a small price to pay.

Search Engine Submission
Getting your site noticed is not an easy task. Unless your site
is one with a highly common or widely advertised name, people
need to search for what you offer and you need to hope your site
comes up in a search.
How do you do that? Is it free? I have made notes about this
before. I have yet to find any one truly successful method. I
am always interested in learning what others have to say.
Come on over and discuss free services, paid services and
software, what you find works best and why.

Security? What Security?
Have any of you noticed the horrendous news lately about the
numerous discovers of security failure and hacking in general?
It is IN-SANE. AOL’s Instant Messenger has a few issues,
repeatedly. A few weeks ago Midwest Airlines was hacked because
some idiot (in my opinion) system administrator never bothered to
change the default password! And then there was one of the
Navy’s web servers. Yikes! The United States Navy, hacked.
I am moderately to heavily involved in the Latin American market
because of one of my other companies. For this reason I read
news related to the region. Did any of you know that some
crackpot judge in the country of Argentina actually ruled,
"Computer hacking is LEGAL"? He did not say it’s not a crime so
in essence it is L-E-G-A-L.
Remind me never to run a business or web site based in Argentina.
What is wrong with people? With companies? It is near impossible
NOT to be paranoid. I get very nervous. I have DSL at home and
work. Both places have routers with NAT (Network Address
Translation). The side effect is a firewall but I often find
myself having the urge to install additional software "just in
case".
Then there are the people that will read ANYTHING that are sent
to them. How many of you know someone that thought their
significant other was send them a love note during the time of
the "I LOVE YOU" virus? Do these people (that open anything)
ever take a moment to think that maybe they should not open
something from someone that they do not know?
Seriously, some people should not be allowed to even sit in front
of a computer, nonetheless operate one (well, at least try to).
Since I am on this topic, what about all the hoaxes that these
same people fall for over and over?!
What is your take on all of this? Is your head ready to explode
like mine?

Navigation
I am going to be starting a series of discussions regarding web
site navigation. I have many ideas but before I speak my piece I
would very much like to get some buzz going. The ideas I would
like to discuss (and hope that you all contribute to) include
text versus graphical menus, text versus JavaScript or DHTML
"flyouts", Flash, and also left or right side of the page.
I expect there to be a lot of thoughts on all of this. Please do
not disappoint me.
