Sausage Sizzler - To Blog or not to Blog? |
 |
| Editorial March 20th, 2003 |
G'Day Sizzlers!
This week I would like your feedback on blogging. I have my own
personal blog as do a number of my friends and family. I want to
know if you have a blog and why?
At Sausage Hosting we are considering setting up a low cost
blogging specific hosting service. Probably using Moveable Type as
the back end.
If you would be interested send me an email with your comments.
Or simply send me an email and let me know about your blog. I may
end up publishing some of them in next weeks newsletter so more
people have an idea of what I am talking about.
There are other great tips and tricks in this weeks issue, so
read on!
Read, learn, then implement.
Keep on sizzling!

HotDog Helper - Accessible websites
While surveys and statistics are unreliable one thing is
undeniable; a surprisingly large percentage of computer users
have some form of disability whether it is major or relatively
minor and is not confined to just the elderly. It's also easy to
forget those who are arthritic or temporarily disabled through
broken bones, etc. Making your website accessible to as many
people as possible is vital to your website design and can only
strengthen and build upon your readership and lend the edge of
professional quality which many amateur websites lack.
Fortunately, HotDog makes this easy with the built-in
Accessibility Wizard. Simply write or load up your web page and
invoke the wizard either by clicking on the blue wheelchair icon
on the shortcut menu or by going to Edit | Accessibility. A panel
will appear and show you exactly what is needed and where. All
you have to do is click on each entry to make the change. Don't
worry if it seems large at first; you will quickly notice that
the same type of issues are generated each time you have not used
the accessibility features of a specific tag. For me, I use a lot
of anchor tags and because I didn't use the Accessibility
attribute for it each anchor drew up the same issue.
Not only is the wizard easy to use, you will quickly remember and
develop websites with these accessibility attributes as
automatically as you insert other tags and attributes and so over
a short period of time the list of accessibility issues will
become less.

HotDog Tip by Kevin Hannan
I thought I would highlight a the topic on error pages that was
featured the other week. This is simply because a couple of
readers added some humorous examples of "404 page not found".
So take a look and have a laugh!

Background
Below are some ideas on using background images and colours.
Use the code <BODY BGCOLOR="#ffffff"> to specify the colour of
your web page background. BODY is the tag and BGCOLOR is the
attribute. The "#ffffff" is the attribute value and is the colour
in hexadecimal. The first two letters refer to the amount of red
in the colour; the second pair is green, and the last pair is
blue. If you are using other applications you can match colours
exactly by specifying the same hexadecimal value. This is useful
for example when you have a graphic that has the same colour
background as your page so that you cannot see the 'join'. You
can use decimal if you wish and in some cases actual names of
colours but this is not generally recommended.
Use the code <BODY BACKGROUND="image.gif"> to specify your web
page background image. BACKGROUND is the attribute and
"image.gif" is the attributes value. This will tile the image you
have specified ("image.gif") into the background. Remember that
some background images make it difficult to read the text above
it.
If you would like your background image to remain static and not
move with the rest of your page as it is scrolled, you should use
the code <BODY BACKGROUND="image.gif" BGPROPERTIES="fixed">.
HotDog has a great Quick Color Wizard that allows you to choose
from all colours including 'web-safe' colours and see the decimal
and hexadecimal values immediately. It also has a host of other
features such as sampling colours directly on the screen; sample
a colour from a magnified part of the window and to find the
nearest colour in the palette and spectrum. I frequently use this
wizard to make sure my colours are exactly the same when using
other applications such as Paint Shop Pro to make sure you can't
see where my graphics edges are!
