Sausage Sizzler - Thanksgiving Thoughts |
 |
| Editorial November 27, 2002 |
G'Day Sizzlers!
Well it is Thanksgiving. This will mean nothing to you if you live
outside of the USA. Personally being an Aussie in the USA, I am
slowly warming to the idea. To me this holiday seems like a nice
excuse for getting together with the family and having a nice meal.
Not a bad idea if you ask me. I just don't like turkey so it is a
bit lost on me.
The launch of the Dog Packs last week was a success, as already we
have people signing up for this new way of getting all your hosting,
domain and tool needs taken care of (not to mention a cool Sausage
T-shirt and baseball cap to boot). If you missed out on last weeks
edition of the Sizzler check the archives. Of course you could always
go directly to the Dog Pack portion of the web site or just go to
Sausage.com. We like to make thing easy for you!
If you are a registered user of HotDog Junior, HotDog Express, HotDog
PageWiz, HotDog Professional 5.5 or HotDog Professional 6 and didn't
receive your extra special deal in a separate mailing (perhaps you
have opted not to receive updates from us) send me an email with your
registration details and product name and I will personally make sure
you get a copy of the special deal we have for our existing
customers.
Now on to this weeks' issue. I have a great program for you that
takes screen shots. It was recommended to me by Harry Hayes. I
think he deserves a T-shirt for this recommendation as it is a great
one! If anyone out there knows who Harry is and writes a review of
his software for the Sizzler, there is a T-shirt in it for them too!
(if I get multiple submissions I will award the best one the T-shirt
and the two runner ups will get something else that is cool).
I am also reviewing Moveable Type blogging software as I spent all
weekend fiddling with my blog. Of course there is also the
spotlights from the Sizzler Forums. However, Bram is AWOL again as I
am afraid he just has too much on his plate!
So no matter where you are in the world, American or not, have a
happy Thanksgiving or a nice weekend with your family.
Keep on sizzling!

MWSnap v.3.0.0.74 95/98/2000/XP Free

Like I said in the editorial, Harry Hayes put me on to this program and what a wonderful little program it is!
The primary function of this program is taking screen shots. It allows you to do so either as a fixed rectangle, a variable rectangle, the full desktop, or a particular window or menu. It does it smoothly and even copes with my dual monitor setup! It then allows you to save the file as any of these file types: PNG,TIF, BMP, JPG, GIF.
Ok so there is not a lot to review in such a program, but wait there is more! It has a really great color picker, and a ruler as well.
Last but not least, it also supports multilingual interfaces meaning that you can use it in the language you prefer.

Moveable Type v2.21 PERL Free
http://moveabletype.org/
You may remember that I reviewed Blogger not too long ago. I got on the blogging bandwagon thanks to seeing Evan Williams, a co-founder of Blogger, speak at Gnomedex 2002. Blogger was good but it didn't have the extra features like commenting available in the free version.
Moveable Type has a lot more control, via its templating system and general backend functionality.
In a nutshell, you can manage multiple blogs from the one interface, have multiple authors and manage what they are allowed to see and do. You can also set up categories in the blog. There is a function to import from other blogs (although I didn't use this). You can even set it up to notify people via email that your blog has been updated.
So all up this is great piece of software, however you do need Perl on your web host, and a grip on your sanity if you are going to tweak it beyond the standard templates. Damian is sure to call me on this, but hey Sausage Hosting hosts my personal web site and blog, and if you have any problems on our hosting I am sure he would give you a hand.

Why people use WYSIWYG editors
Here is an interesting thread that discusses the pros and cons of using a WYSIWYG editing tool to build you web site.
This is a really interesting topic of discussion that would be great for new web developers to have a look at.
