Sausage Sizzler - HotFTP and FlashPoint Releases |
 |
| Editorial August 1st, 2003 |
G'Day Sizzlers!
This week has been an interesting one. I am slowly blending in to
the Seattle way of life. I am pretty sure this has a lot to do
with the caffiene to body mass ratio, along with the amount of
time one spends in the great outdoors.
On the Sausage front our customers are taking advantage of our
realitively new Domain service. Feedback has started to grow with
a number of customers emailing me in the last week somewhat
amazed at the features offered with registeration.
We also have a couple of new program releases, HotFTP and
FlashPoint. Full details on the programs and pricing are further
down in this issue!
While Kevin gets forum regulars started with some interesting
topics. Users jump in with their own experience and add to the
shared knowledge!
On another note Lockergnome just held its third annual Gnomedex
convention. I was lucky enough to go to the first two, and have
alreayd heard a number of great reports on this years event. To
hear from Chris Pirillo on this very personal convention take a
look at his Window's Daily report:

Read, learn and implement!
Keep on sizzling!

HotDog Macros - Working Hand-in-Glove With You
Many people are put off from writing macros despite the fact that
they can easily be the most powerful tools in your armoury. Its
potency lies in the way that you specify exactly what it is that
the macro does - it is effectively a tool that you create.
Therefore a macro can give you speed, precision and control in
performing any number of instructions from a single keystroke or
mouse click. This saves you time and effort manually inserting
each command and reduces the need for proofreading and error
checking. These benefits multiply the more you use them.
HotDog's Macro Editor is the friendliest and easiest I have used.
You can access it from the main menu by selecting View | Resource
Manager | Macro Editor (or Alt-v / r / m if you want fast
keyboard access). By default the Macro Editor panel will appear
to the right of HotDog's main editing window.
To create a macro, select 'Add New Macro' from either the Macro
Editor toolbar or by right-clicking your mouse within the panel.
This will bring up the 'Edit Macro' dialog window in which there
are three text fields to complete. Firstly give your macro a name
that will be meaningful to you. In the second text box insert the
tags/code that you want to appear before selected text and in the
third text box the tags/code you want to appear after the
selected text.
A simple example might illustrate this point more clearly. If I
want to emphasise selected blocks of text I might give the macro
a name of 'Emphasise'. In the second text box I might use the b i
u tags to code this emphasis and in the third text box I would
use the closing tags, in the correct order; /u /i /b. When I
press 'OK' my new macro will appear in the Macro Editor panel. To
use the macro all I have to do is highlight/select my text from
HotDog's main editing window and double-click the macro I want to
use. You can also drag any macro onto the main editing window as
well. In this instance I have entered 6 tags in just one
keystroke, and all in the correct place and order!
For greater speed I can assign a keyboard shortcut to any macro
at any time. If my shortcut clashes with another HotDog will tell
me. I can also categorize my macros, delete and edit them for
complete control. You can also use your HotDog macros in any
HotDog project saving you more time and effort!
You can also 'abuse' this tool to give you features that the
multi-line clipboard lacks. By definition the multi-line
clipboard can only store text. By using the Macro Editor you can
insert code and text into the second (or third) text box and
leave the remaining text box empty. The code and text will then
be pasted at the cursor whenever the macro is invoked. So at a
stroke you could have one macro for the header of your web pages
and another for the footer and some more macros for in-between!
At work I use the Macro Editor for pasting in frequently used
blocks of text and code. In this way my work is becoming more
modular with a corresponding decrease in time to debug. For
example I have a macro for my contact details, contact forms,
chapter and section headers, footers, and so on.
One amazing feature that I cannot miss is the ability to put your
macros on HotDog's main toolbar! This is achieved simply by
customising your toolbar (View | Toolbars | Customize) and by
dragging your macro onto the toolbar within the dialog box. Be
aware that you may have to resize your toolbars to see your
additional toolbar buttons.
Why not give it a go? In just a few minutes you could have your
own macros sitting on your favorite web editor's toolbar! There
isn't an easier and more efficient way to work!
