G'Day Sizzlers!

We have a lot of projects rolling along at a good speed at the moment. The way things are going we will have them all finished at the same time! Next week I will have some early sketches of the new HotDog character for you to see. then at some point you may see the Sausage web site suddenly change to a new design.

We have some great content in this weeks issue. Lots to spark your imagination and give you some new applications to play with. However Bram ends on a somber note, which is very appropriate for today.

Be safe and be kind to your fellow man.

Keep on sizzling!

Well I think I may have finally found it! Yes this spam solution is the best I have found. Let me tell you why I have Chuck Burnell to thank for recommending this to me.

It uses a collective system that creates a list of known spammers, this list is then applied to your incoming email. All the spam email is filtered into a spam folder.

I like this solution as it lets me double check that all the email flagged as spam IS actually spam. So far it has not flagged anything that is not spam.

It also gives you two new buttons in Outlook (yes only works with Outlook at the moment), "block and "unblock". These allow you to judge your incoming email. If it is spam you click "block" and it is put into your spam folder. If something in your spam folder is not spam, you click "unblock".

Cloudmark use some sort of backend system that builds up a rating for each user, weighting the accuracy of their responses. this in turn means that you should get a more accurate indication of whether your incoming email is spam or not.

Of this system relies on having users. The more the better. So please give it a try. As it helps out everyone!

  Dynamic Tip

Advanced Guestbook 2.3.1 PHP MySQL

http://www.proxy2.de/scripts.php

I found this little script while surfing around this week. The guys who wrote it explain it the best so just me quote them:
"Advanced Poll is a polling system with powerful administration tool. It features: multiple polls, templates, unlimited options, multi-language support, IP-Logging, IP-Locking, cookie support, comment feature, vote expire feature, random poll support and more. Supports textfile and mySQL database. "

I really liked it as it gave a nice clean layout and looks somewhat more professional than the other run of the mill guest books I have seen out there.

How do you organize your web files and folders?

I was browsing the forums today and came across a question posed by what appears to be a person new to web design. The question asked was simple: When uploading images and files, should they be in the same folder or should one make sub folders? I have paraphrased a bit but in essence this is a truly great question.

When I first started out in web design back in 1995 I used to put everything in one folder. Everything then consisted of at most 5 or 6 pages and a handful of graphics.

Over the years I have learned how valuable organization in every aspect of business is, including the simplest concept of organizing folders.

When I sign up a client, before I even think of a design I create all the folders that I will need, both for web and for other files. Since the focus is web in this thread I will keep it on web folders.

I create the following as basic structure:

/httpdocs
/httpdocs/Templates
/httpdocs/images
/httpdocs/images/logo
/httpdocs/images/Template_images

The larger a site gets the more folders it may need. I think that it is just a great way to keep track of files. Any image is always located in the images folder or a subfolder of images.

I could easily go on, showing an overwhelming example of massively anal organization, but instead I ask any and all of you to share your views and methods on this.

  Designed for Browsing

Being Graphic

Is there such a thing as too much or too many graphics in web design? I imagine it truly depends on how the graphics are used. If the graphic elements are the design, and the design flows well, then perhaps "too much" does not exist. If it turns out that the graphics are buttons, banners and clutter, "too much" may be an appropriate criticism.

I was looking around at web sites today and one of my favorite music groups, Bon Jovi (go ahead.. make fun of me) has, in my opinion, a well done web site that makes smart use of graphical elements.

http://www.islandrecords.com/bonjovi/home.las

The design is appropriate for the subject.

Recently (a month or 2 ago) YAHOO!, the site that traditionally has had 99% text only on its home page, added more graphical elements. In the case of YAHOO! though, the use is light and also mixed with slight color variations.

http://www.yahoo.com

Use of graphics or overuse of graphics can be bad in a few ways. If done poorly it make a page take a long time to download. Overuse can also make a page difficult to read due to heavy distraction.

I do not want to put any particular site down. Instead, I ask any of you to do that, you like. Show samples of what you think are sites that make good use of graphics as well as over- or even under-use of graphics.

A day to remember

Today is September 11, 2002. It has been one year since the deadly attacks on the US. Who can believe it has already been one year? I certainly cannot.

Surely some readers think that the USA got what it deserved, that it was due and justly executed.

For those of you that are more in touch with reality, it is a sad day, one that should be remembered forever. Terrorism is a foul act and there is no just reason for it to occur. Terrorism is a form of ignorance, just as racism.

There is enough news coverage today so I do not feel compelled to give my own views and expressions any further.

All I ask is that you all remember.
