 |
| Editorial March 13th, 2003 |
G'Day Sizzlers!
I have a great new program based on HotDog Now! Instead of flying
the flag for HotDog, in this program you get the chance to
promote Sausage Hosting. In turn you have the oppurtunity to win
discount coupons for your own hosting or other cool items.
All you have to do is sign up at Sausage Hosting and place the
code you are provided somewhere on your Web site. Then as people
click the link you will have your tally added to.
Here is the link you need to go to to sign up:

Sponsor - Sausage Hosting - What our Customers have to say |
 |
Make Sausage your one stop shop for all of your web needs!
Don't let us tell you how good we are, here is what Chris Stark
was more than happy to let us reprint for you all:
I figured that Sausage would be on top of it. I host a total of 32 web
sites for different people, and I have to say that Sausage is by far the
most reliable. It has probably the best admin package and the fastest
helpdesk responses. I am trying to get the rest of my clients to switch
over the Sausage. It would save me a lot of time and them a lot of money.

HotDog Helper - Ergonomics Part Two
As promised from last week, I'll be showing you how to save time
and effort when using HotDog and an external browser such as
Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, or any of the other
browsers available on the market today.
Firstly, consider what size browser you will be designing for.
Most projects tend to be 800 x 600, but other projects can be
slightly larger. The first step is to change the desktop size to
accommodate this.
The more experienced will know how to do this; but here are the
instructions for those who are not sure. Either right-click on
any empty, clear area of your desktop and select properties or go
to your Control Panel by selecting Start | Settings | Control
Panel and then select display. Both methods will bring up the
same Display Properties dialog box. At the bottom-left corner you
will see a slider - click and drag it until the slider value says
800 by 600 pixels and press ok. This will change your desktop to
that size.
Now open your browser application and maximise it to fill the
screen. Then go to the grey taskbar near the Start button and
click on the desktop icon - this will minimise all your open
applications (look for the browser, it has minimised to the grey
taskbar at the bottom of the screen) and show your desktop.
Change the desktop size again, but this time to something like
1280 x 1024, using the same method as above.
The final step is to click on the Internet browser button on the
taskbar to bring it up again. Notice it has kept its original
size of 800 x 600. I prefer to move my browser to the upper-
right corner of the screen and I do this by clicking and dragging
the blue title bar of the browser application. Then open up
HotDog and resize its window by clicking and dragging the window
frames as required. Normally I place this to the left of my
browser so that both programs are side-by-side and occupy the
width of the screen.
Sometimes, a bit of trial-and-error is needed to find the sizes
that suit your needs best. All you need to do is have both HotDog
and your browser side-by-side, but the instructions above also
show how to keep the browser at a specific size so you know how
the layout is. Every time you refresh your browser you will see
the changes immediately and without having to repeatedly click
applications back and forth.
A final and separate tip is that you may prefer to change the
size of text in HotDog when working with high screen resolution
sizes. HotDog makes this so easy by including a Editing Window
Appearance dialog box in Edit | Preferences. Many of my
colleagues have expressed surprise at how much easier it is to
code when the text is larger, leading to less fatigue.

Meta Tags
The META tag is often one of the least understood tags in HTML,
and yet it can do so much. Over the next few weeks we will be
demystifying this tag.
Search Engines have programs that search the Internet for web
sites and catalogue/index them. Sometimes you might not want this
to happen so insert the following in between your <HEAD> </HEAD>
tags.
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX">
Use this tag if you don't want a specific page to be indexed by a
search engine. If you don't want the robot to index any links
contained within your Web site, add NOFOLLOW to the tag:
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX,NOFOLLOW">
